Starfish Ambassadors: Senior Tax Relief Program
The Owen J. Roberts School District is proud to announce our Senior Tax Relief Program. This will enable our Senior Citizens to receive a relief on their property taxes in exchange for service in the District by contributing their expertise and skills assisting the staff with a positive contribution to our children’s quality of education. This is an ideal way for Senior Citizens to learn more about the District while working with teachers and students.

Elementary Areas of Assistance and Needs:
  • Story telling
  • Library assistance
  • Health room assistance
  • Mini lessons on experience and travels
  • Flash card drills
  • Reading with children
  • Correcting papers
  • Cutout figures, etc.
  • Cutout papers and distribute
  • Stuff envelopes/mailboxes
  • Copying
  • Collate and staple materials
  • Help with special events
  • Computer Lab assistance
  • Review for testing
  • Weeding and planting
Secondary Areas of Assistance and Needs:
  • Shop area assistance
  • Clerical
  • Hallway, cafeteria, lavatory monitors
  • School traffic/bus monitors
  • Tutoring
  • Co-curricular activity
  • Weeding and planting
Administration Buildings Areas of Assistance and Needs:
  • Copying
  • Collate and staple materials
  • Catalogue and monitor professional library
  • Help Coordinator take transportation calls
  • Weeding and planting
Eligibility Requirements:
  • Must be 60 years of age or older
  • Must be a resident of the Owen J. Roberts School District and live in the home for which you pay Owen J. Roberts School District Real Estate Tax
  • Volunteer services to the District in accordance with Policy 624
Amount of Service:
  • Volunteers receive a tax rebate for a maximum of 62.5 hours at a rate of $8.00/hour and $500 per residential real estate property. Hours are worked as needed during a normal school day.
  • Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 15 hours to receive any tax credit.
  • A credit voucher to be used for the subsequent year taxes.
Application Process:

Eligible Senior Citizens can obtain application and clearance forms at the Administration Building.

They must complete all clearances: in accordance with page #4 of Policy 624.

All fees will be paid by the applicant initially. The clearance fees will be reimbursed to the volunteer after 15 hours of service. Reimbursement for the TB test will be for the cost of the test only. Applicants that have obtained satisfactory clearances and tests will be accepted into the program on a first come/first serve basis. Once we receive the applications, volunteers will be contacted so we can schedule an appointment to discuss their interests and develop a placement.

Maximum Hours:

The maximum credit is 62.5 hours per school year. We encourage volunteers to volunteer their services beyond 62.5 hours per school year, but there will be no additional credit issued for this time.

This program must be approved annually by the Owen J. Roberts School Board.
