Acceptable activities for volunteers in the classroom fall into the general category of providing practice in skills and strategies previously taught by classroom teachers. The following are examples of acceptable activities for volunteers to carry out with students. The teacher determines and supervises ALL activities of volunteers in the classroom. This includes how the activity is to be done and what materials are to be used.
EXAMPLES OF ACCEPTABLE ACTIVITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS
- Listen to student practice reading aloud
- Read aloud to small group or individual student (for pleasure or content information)
- Provide practice in skill development (i.e. sight vocabulary, ABC recognition, math facts, spelling words, etc.)
Flash Cards Skill Games Paper/pencil activities (worksheet) Differentiated modality practice—tracing, use of manipulatives to solve math problems
- Monitor work in centers
- Publishing Lab
Input student writing into computer Print out Bind into booklets
- Take student dictation
- Monitor following directions/Repeat directions
- Rehearse learning (memorized poem, study for test, etc,)
