Dear Parents and Guardians,
This is an explanation of Word Study in Second Grade as well as an explanation of each Word Study homework activity your child will complete. Keep this in a safe place for your review. This will also be posted on our class web page.
Each week we will be sending home a sort to be kept at home, an answer key, and papers to record each of the following homework assignments. Each homework assignment should be completed on the date assigned in your child’s planner. For example, CSEW should be completed on Monday night and is due the next day on Tuesday. The packet will stay in your child’s assignment book folder until the day of the test.
Each set of words will last for one week. (Monday - Friday) Each week we will practice the sort and develop a solid understanding of each column as well as apply that knowledge to their reading and writing.
Homework Assignment Explanations
Cut/Sort/Explain/Write (CSEW): Students should first cut out his or her word study words for the week. Students will then sort word study words into proper categories/columns. (Don’t forget to mix up the words!) Students need to explain the patterns to an adult who has the answer key. Example, “oddball” words such as “was” do not fit the “short a” sound pattern. Then students should copy the words they sorted on the Cut/Sort/Explain/Write page. Students should put the cut-outs into a baggie or someplace safe at home to use next week.
Sort (no worksheet- nothing to write): Students will sort their word study words into proper columns. (Don’t forget to mix up the words!) Students need to explain the patterns in each category to an adult. This activity should be done each night.
Blind Sort: Students do a blind sort. Students make the correct number of columns for the word categories and write the headers. Parents call out words and students sort and spell words from memory. Parents, please circle mistakes in pen and have your child make any corrections in spelling and sorting. This is to help study for the test. Please note, the test will have words not originally in their sort- this will ensure that they understand the patterns and reasoning behind the sort.
Typically the schedule will look like this:
Monday- Introduce new sort in class
-Cut/Sort/Explain/Write (CSEW) homework
Tuesday- Practice sort and discovery at home-parent sign/date WS notebook
Wednesday- Practice sort and discovery at home- parent sign/date WS notebook
Thursday – Blind Sort Homework
Friday- Word Sort Assessment in class
