    East Vincent Elementary School News

Hello, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

I hope this e-mail finds you enjoying your family as we continue the winter break. School resumes on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

In the meantime, East Vincent unplugs as part of our winter break. The main office and all staff are “closed” until 1/2/19. This is a time for everyone to recharge and to practice self-care. Here’s what I shared with staff (don’t know about The Great British Baking Show haha).

    a

The next Skylerts will come to your inboxes on 1/1/19. Notice the “s” in Skylerts. Starting in 2019 and based on family survey feedback from 2018 and 2019, the Skylerts will take on a new look. Stay tuned!

May your family have a peaceful, joyous, and healthy winter break. From my family to your family… thank you for all you do to support our EV community of learners.

    East Vincent Elementary School News

Hello, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

We’re in the homestretch of the 2018 calendar year. This week is the last week of school until Wednesday, January 2. We’ll enjoy the festive sounds of music, energetic students, and spirited learning this week.

Kudos to our talented musicians from the Senior Band and Orchestra Ensembles and from the EV Chorus. The recent Winter Concerts filled the air with sounds of the season. Both evening events were well attended and showcased our students and their teachers beautifully. Many thanks to Mr. Klick, Mr. Hall, and Miss Marciano for their inspiration and leadership.

    East Vincent Elementary School News

Hello, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

We had another busy week of learning and activities at EV. Check out our EV happenings regularly on Facebook, Twitter, and the EV webpage, including the calendar and newsletters. Don’t use social media? No problem. The Twitter feed for EV is on the bottom left of our webpage.

    a

Many thanks to Ms. Smith, EV Art Teacher, the Friends of the Arts, and the entire community for supporting arts in our school. Today was a magnificent event. Thanks to one of our families for sharing a fun picture from today.

    a

Congratulations to our two First Lego League teams and their faculty sponsors, Miss Mitton and Mrs. DiPasqua. Both teams competed at the regional qualifier today. The GaliLegos team placed 2nd in the research project. The Apollo Agents earned second place for Robot Design and Programming award. Way to go!

    a

    a

SAFETY DRILLS AND PLANS AT EV

We conducted our December drills on Wednesday with a fire drill and then a weather drill. Our students and staff followed procedures and stayed calm. Representatives from the East Vincent Police Department and OJRSD Security and Safety Department were present during both drills.

Our January drills will include a fire drill and mock lockdown drills for the cafeteria and playground again.

    PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AT EV

This week, a community member on Facebook questioned whether our students and staff say the Pledge of Allegiance at EV. The answer is “yes.” Two comments were made that stated our staff allow students to vote whether the class will recite the Pledge or not. While some classes vote on the “Pledge Leader,” we do not vote to recite/not to recite the Pledge.

    OJRSD School Board Policy 807:

“Accordingly, each student shall be required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance during each day's opening exercises. If a student has conscientious objections which interfere with full participation in the Pledge of Allegiance, said student shall maintain a respectful attitude throughout the ceremony.”

If your child ever mentions something at home that doesn’t seem quite right, please contact your child’s teacher and/or me.

    SCHOOL-WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SYSTEM (SWPBS)

The School-Wide Positive Behavior System Core Team met this week to review initiatives and upcoming professional development. While we have four strong approaches in our tier one (everyone participates), we know it does not “reach” everyone. Our school team, as a result, has expanded to include a mental health counselor, consultations and trainings with behavior specialists from Chester County Intermediate Unit and Mrs. Morgan from OJRMS, counseling hours from Child Guidance Resource Center, increased presence from our Safety and Security staff, and participation in the Chester County ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Coalition. All of the additions help us work with students who demonstrate tiers 2-3 behaviors (unexpected behaviors), help us work with students who observe unexpected behaviors, and continue professional development for our staff.

The next two topics that you’ll learn more about related to our SWPBS will be a refresher of the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program and a close look at trauma-informed care in schools.

DECEMBER CAT CASH – WHOLE-SCHOOL REWARDS

Students may spend Cat Cash on extra recess on the last Friday of every month this year! The extra recess will last 15 minutes.

    6th GRADE CATS AMBASSADORS

Almost all 6th Grade CATS Ambassadors Committees met during lunches this week. Some committees are in the brainstorming stage, while others are in full action mode. Don’t miss the work from our Skylert and Can Wars Committees so far!

    East Vincent Elementary School News

Hello, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

Tis the season for germs. We had quite the experience this week with the stomach virus (myself included). Each time we have students who are ill, we do request the classrooms receive a deeper clean. Here a reminder from Mrs. DePaul, our Certified School Nurse:

    a

Also, we make every attempt for students at EV to have outdoor recess. Please remind your child to dress in layers, to wear a coat, and to have warm accessories.

    a

    WORKS OF ART

5th grade artists who participate in the special art club with Ms. Smith created beautiful pieces for the Friends of the Arts Tree Festival on December 8 and our school concert.

    SCHOOL-WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SYSTEM (SWPBS)

Next week, we plan to review bathroom expectations with students in grades five and six. In the bathrooms, our oldest students need some reminders to take responsibility and stay safe. We’ve found paper towels in sinks, which cause pooling or overflow, and excess soap on the floor. Please have a conversation with bathroom expectations at EV. Thank you!

*Note that the voice expectations were updated to 0 voice.

The 6th Grade CATS Ambassadors divided into committees to share CATS in our community. The first two committees, Can Wars and Skylert, met last week. Starting next week, the Skylert committee will spotlight a staff member and highlight newsworthy successes of students.

CAN WARS for COVENTRY LIONS CLUB FOOD BASKETS

In keeping with our school-wide theme of “Choose Kindness,” we encourage our community to participate in our holiday food drive.  The food drive continues through Thursday, December 20 at 8:30 a.m. Our donations will become part of the Coventry Lions Club food baskets which will be distributed to disadvantaged families in the OJRSD area.

The Lions Club receives meats, fresh fruits and vegetables and other perishable items through the GIANT Food Market.  Our school will be collecting the canned and dry food items:

    • Canned Corn
    • Canned String/Cut Beans
    • Other Canned Vegetables
    • Canned Fruit
    • Canned Yams
    • Macaroni & Cheese
    • Cake or Brownie Mix
    • Candy Canes

Although there is no obligation to participate, we hope that every family can donate at least one item.  Please feel free to send your donation to school with your child. We also need donations of boxes to collect our food items. Boxes that are the size of a copy paper box are perfect.

We are hoping to make the season brighter for local families. Thank you so much, in advance, for your contributions.
