Reading: We will continue our unit on reading nonfiction.  So far, we have discussed how to make predictions and learn something new just from previewing the cover and a few pages of a nonfiction book. This is just like when we take a “sneak peek” of any story.  We are focusing on chatting about what is happening and rereading to make sure we understand the information. We will also be working on fluency, which is reading smoothly while using stress and intonation.

Phonics: We will investigate the trick y. When we see y at the end of a word, we need to try different vowel sounds. Also, we will make sure we use strong endings when we write words.

Writing: We will continue our Informational Unit. The students have created a list of topics they are experts in. Also, we have been looking at a nonfiction mentor text as a model for what’s included in a teaching book. This week, we will talk about becoming teachers and how teachers think of questions students might have. We want to make sure these questions are answered in our writing. We will teach with pictures as well as words! We will continue to work on handwriting.

Math: We will start unit 4. This unit is: Length and Addition Facts. During the unit the students will measure lengths using nonstandard units and begin working on addition fact fluency. There is an emphasis on students being able to explain (in writing) how they solved a problem. We will continue to practice explaining our mathematical thinking through writing. At home, you can have your child explain exactly what they did to solve a homework problem.

Social Studies: This week, we will start learning about historical artifacts as we discuss why things change (advance) over time.
