Reading: Readers will learn that to really understand our books, that it's important not to just pay attention to the actions, but also to pay attention to the dialogue. We will look at how to keep track of who's talking as they read. Our readers will be reminded of how to stop and use clues in the lillustrations and the text to infer the meanings of unfamilar vocabulary, extending what they learned to do in nonfiction books.
Phonics: Next week our Word Builders will look out and listen up to use the right vowel team when they read and write. They'll need to remember that some vowel teams sound the same, but look different. Then we'll add to our toolbox by adding the vowel teams AW and AU, noting that they make the same sound.
Writing: Next week students will learn that writers often use chekclists to make their writing the best that it can be. Writers will also learn that they not only write reviews to share their opinions, but also to persuade others to share their opinion. We will look at mentor texts to learn the best way to do that.
Math: We will look at how knowing double facts will help with subtraction. We will talk about the "counting up" and "counting back" strategies, and when is it best to use them. We will also be exploring shapes and their attributes. We continue to work on explaining our thinking when solving problems.
Science: We will begin our unit or Animal Classifications. We will first look at invertabrates and vertabrates, learning that their are more invertabrate animals in the world than vertabrates.
