    East Vincent Elementary School News

Good Afternoon, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

This time last week, we were gearing up to celebrate the last day of the 2017-2018 school year. As part of the fun, students were recognized for their myriad of accomplishments. We highlighted the inaugural grade 6 Legacy Art project, which adorns one of our walls already.

    L

We also thought it was about time to name our mascot, Wildcat, who joined us for our end-of-year assembly and the last day’s dismissal. Other elementary schools in the district named Wildcat, so we thought it would be a good idea to name Wildcat, too. The sixth-grade students nominated two names for the entire student population to choose between via a live vote: Winnie and Wowser. Winning by popular vote, our Wildcat now has a name… Wowser!

Finally, if you haven’t seen or heard about it yet, our faculty and staff had a blast showing our students what we do after the students leave on the last day of school. Feel free to check out the fun by CLICKING HERE. Many thanks to Mrs. Riggs and her team for assembling the clips for our video.

This is the last Skylert of the 2017-2018 school year. I would like to take a quick moment and thank you for your partnership and communication.

If you need or would like to visit the East Vincent Main Office during the summer months, we are open Monday-Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. I suggest calling 610-469-5106 before your visit to ensure the person who you plan to visit is in the office.

    CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR STUDENTS

Over Memorial Day weekend, four teams of Owen J. Roberts students competed in the world championships of creative problem solving at Iowa State University at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals.  The team from East Vincent finished the contest in fourth place overall and placed second in the spontaneous problem solving portion of the contest scoring a 99.77 points out of a possible 100. Congratulations to: Mackenzie Keith, Kayla Shea, Zach Levin, Khya d’Angelo, Rachael Epps, Megha Gudipudi, and Lucius Neeley. Compliments as well to middle school students: Ava Zepp, Anant Pothakamury, Christian Carrol, Nick Wood, Charlie Kullen, Aman Pothakamury, and Addy D’Arcy.

Congratulations to the 38 new members of our Lion Cubs Club. On May 31, new members were inducted into the school's Service Club. Each student was presented with a certificate of membership and a club t-shirt.

    CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FACULTY

Kudos to Ms. Rapp, an EV grade 3 teacher, who through a rigorous selection process, was selected to be one of 100 Keystones STARS. The term STARS stands for: State Technology Advocates Redefining Schools. Keystones STARS are advocates and influencers within their school districts when it comes to teaching and learning with technology. Ms. Rapp will have the opportunity to attend a week-long summit, which is designed to enrich and invigorate the skills and competencies of the summit’s attendees.

Congratulations to Miss Mitton who biked 67 miles from Philly to the beach, raising money for cancer research and patient support services for the American Cancer Society’s Bike-a-thon.

    M

Great work to our 15-member School-Wide Positive Behavior System team who attended trainings at Chester County Intermediate Unit and turned around training for a productive end-of-year faculty and staff meeting to introduce SWPBS and how it will look and feel for EV during the 2018-2019 school year.

    IT’S SURVEY TIME

Three times per school year, I like to gather feedback formally from families to help us learn and grow. The survey includes three primary themes: communication, events and activities, and safety.  Please consider sharing your thoughts via a survey: CLICK HERE. We had 72 responses for our March survey. I’d like for us to have at least 100 responses. The survey will close June 30.

    A NOTE ABOUT SUMMER SUGGESTIONS

Summer Reading: EV Battle of the Books!

Research shows that students who do not read over the summer experience what is called “summer slide.” This means that they return to school in September two or more reading levels below the level on which they were reading when they left school in June. Please encourage your child to participate in the EV Battle of the Books to avoid the summer slide! Your child’s teacher will be sending home a short packet of information and resources explaining our East Vincent summer reading challenge. You can also find the digital documents here. Students should return all completed work to their new teacher in September, as rewards for various levels of participation will be given. Thank you for your support at home, and happy summer reading!

    KUDOS TO OUR EV COMMUNITY

Superb performance by our EV band musicians at their elementary band concert on Wednesday evening. The audience enjoyed the sounds of spring and other musical selections under the direction of Mr. Klick and his colleagues for the spring concert. Most impressive were the soloists in the jazz band who performed improvisational interludes for us.

    A NOTE ABOUT TECHNOLOGY USAGE

We encourage families to monitor student technology usage at home, especially if students created their own social media accounts such as Instagram and Snapchat. Most social media accounts require students to be at least 13 years of age; however, we know families make the decisions that work best for them. With that in mind, again, we encourage families to monitor student technology usage because the content of the social media posts, at times, trickles into the school environment and results in hurt feelings and distracts from student learning.

    NOTES ABOUT UPCOMING FIELD DAY

Field Day is Wednesday, May, 23rd.  The rain date is the next day, Thursday, May 24th. The location will again be at the High School stadium field!

All participants must sign and provide necessary field trip paperwork.

Outline of Events for the day:

    AM/PM kindergarten students – 3rd Grade

8:45          Buses depart East Vincent to High School

                9:00–11:15       Field Day Activities

11:15        Buses depart High School to East Vincent

    • All Kindergarten students participate in the AM session, there will be no PM kindergarten on Field Day
    • Kinder pick up will be at East Vincent at 11:30

    Grades 4 – 6

11:45        Buses depart EV to High School

        12:00- 1:45 Field Day Activities

1:45           Buses depart High School to East Vincent

Lunch for all students will be at East Vincent either before or after Field Day.  As all lunch periods will be different, only the “kid sack” option will be available on this day if a student does not pack.  Many classes may have an outdoor ‘picnic’ type setting.

A few items to consider for Field Day:

    • Parents are welcome to watch from the stadium seats
    • Participants are encouraged to wear sunscreen and hats
    • No food, gum, or colored drinks are allowed in the stadium
    • Participants should bring a water bottle with their name on it. Students will be allowed to refill their water bottles from the stadium water fountain
    • Sneakers only
    • Students will have an opportunity to get wet, but please school appropriate clothing only

PS – We are often asked why a medical form is required to be completed for every field trip.  Anytime we are taking the children off of the property, we want to be certain that we have all current information at our fingertips in case of an accident or emergency.  On the Field Day, our school nurse will set-up a station at the HS field and we will have a second nurse at EVES.

Insurance information and medical information, including medications, are continually changing when working with 500+ students.  We considered using a medical field trip form on file and asking parents to update the form when necessary.  It only took a minute or two to come up with various ways in which that system could fail us.  To ensure the safety of all of our children, we will need a medical form specific for this field trip as we will take these particular forms with us to the stadium field.

A NOTE FROM MRS. QUINN, SCHOOL COUNSELOR

To the dear students and families of East Vincent,

As we approach the end of the school year and begin to look at plans for the summer, and dare I say it, next school year, I wanted to share an announcement with each of you. I will be taking a professional sabbatical leave for the school year 2018-19 in order to pursue additional studies that will support my work as a school counselor here at East Vincent. Although I will miss all of the students during this time, I look forward to growing as a professional and being able to spend additional time with my own family.

In preparation for this plan, we are working diligently to secure a substitute for the year who will be equipped and excited to support all of the students, staff, and families at East Vincent! I am participating, along with Ms. Seeley and a team of our staff, in a series of interviews in order to find the most qualified professional who will best fit the needs of East Vincent. Once this person has been secured, a transition is planned so that this individual will be well-prepared to begin next school year with both feet on the ground.

It is important to me that I am transparent with this plan in advance of June 8, so that I may end the year with your children authentically and have an opportunity to discuss this with them if they so choose. I assure you that I am already working diligently to make sure that the transition is as seamless as possible.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns cquinn@ojrsd.com or 610-469-5543.

    Thank you,

    Chrissie Quinn

    6

On May 31, Anna Wilson, Alex Braun, Zach Levin, and Lauren Hailey will represent our school

at the Chester County Math 24 Tournament.  We wish you all great luck and speedy problem solving!

Congratulations to our East Vincent Envirothon team.  Last week, ten of our students participated in the Chester County Envirothon Competition.  Our team tested in five different categories relating to the Pennsylvania outdoors: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils and Land Use, Outdoor Safety, and Wildlife in Pennsylvania.  Our team posted their strongest scores at the contest in the areas of Outdoor Safety and Soil Health.

Congratulations to Lily Cockerham, Emma Finger, Declan Gallagher, Tyler Rodriguez, Anna Bernardo, Loren Kunkle, Hadley Nicholas, Megan Alessi, Marley Vallino, and Lilly Barner for their efforts and for representing our school in this contest.

Additionally, a big thank you goes out to co-coach, sixth grader Cole Young, for all of his help in training the team.

    A NOTE OF THANKS

A big thank you to Mrs. Pomager for assisting our EV students and staff with the introduction of the Gaga Ball pit.  She helped to referee the new EV recess game so students could learn the rules of the game and have fun.

A plethora of thanks for all you donated, shared, sent to make Teacher Appreciation Week memorable. We enjoyed delivering notes, flowers, jokes, food, and wish list items to the adults at EV.

Many thanks to our reading and math specialists, Mrs. Little, Mrs. Rittenhouse, Mrs. Shebelsky, and Mrs. Hatherill, for coordinating a Break-Out session for students who participate in our Title I academic support program. Students enjoyed utilizing their problem-solving and collaboration skills in a fun way, and earned a book to add to their home libraries.

    A NOTE ABOUT TECHNOLOGY USAGE

When I’m at home and when I’m at school, I hear about the new craze in technology, Fortnite. When I’ve viewed Fortnite in my own home with my 14-year old son, it reminds me of a mix between Minecraft and a first-person shooter (FPS) game, minus extreme gore.

The reason I share this with you is because Fortnite is creeping its way into the school environment seemingly more frequently. We’ve had some discussions with families and students about unkind, inappropriate, and unexpected chatting amongst students that occurs in the game and trickles into the school environment.

As a parent and an educator, I wanted to share an article that I shared with my own son and found helpful:https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/30/well/family/parenting-the-fortnite-addict.html. I also wanted to remind you of a resource that may help you navigate the endless world of entertainment and technology as a parent: www.commonsensemedia.org.

A NOTE FROM OJRSD DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS

It's that time of year when the days are growing warmer, but the buildings have not switched over to air conditioning. The district has 21 large chiller plants and soon to be 23, some have two pipe systems and others have 4 pipe, which dictate how quickly a system can be switched from heating to cooling and back.

It takes a week if no issues arise to switch over that many systems with all the pumps, valves and controls involved in the operations. We do this twice per year with our controls specialist, our contracted chiller service and a JCI ATC technician. To schedule such a team, it takes considerable coordination and we must do it months in advance to have all parties available.

When we first began adding centralized air conditioning to buildings, it was agreed to by the school board after considerable discussion to use May 15 and Oct 15 as the target dates for switching. These were not just arbitrarily chosen, they were basically the industry standards at the time due to two pipe restrictions. We have been following this time line since that time and unfortunately weather does not cooperate and stay seasonal as is being experienced this week.

Very basic but far from all inclusive.

    • Heating systems need to be shut down to allow water to chill in the pipes, to avoid hot water damaging the inside of the chiller tube bundles. This takes several days.
    • Cooling tower needs to be filled, chemically treated and put into service.
    • Hot water pumps need to be shut down and chilled water pumps activated.
    • All valves to divert systems need to be changed over.
    • Control systems are activated to switch over to cooling and off on heating.

This is only to start making the chilled water for the central systems. Every single field unit (a/c terminal fan coil, etc.) has their own controls and potential issues. And to simplify this you can imagine an average of one unit for every single room in the district to get a true understanding of how much is involved.

    • In good years, we get this done in a week, most years are not that good. That is why we begin the week before the 15th to try and have most issues resolved.
    • Hope this is clear enough to understand. Not an easy process and far from turning a thermostat to a colder setting.

    A NOTE ABOUT SAFETY

On Tuesday, we had our monthly fire drill in record time… 1 minute and 45 seconds!!!! Our goal is to evacuate EV in two minutes or less.  After our fire drill, we proceeded directly to an evacuation drill. Older students assisted our youngest students from EV campus to Grace Assembly campus. We also stressed the importance of safety as we crossed route 23 with the assistance of the East Vincent PD and OJRSD Safety and Security team. We reviewed that we evacuate the EV campus when there is a danger here so Grace Assembly is our safe spot to reconvene. As always, we published our drill practice on social media and our school webpage so families did not panic if they saw a police presence at school.

A NOTE ABOUT OUR SNACK CLOSET

Our snack closet has enough snacks for 3-4 days. We provide free snacks to our students who join us for breakfast each day.  The students, who would otherwise not have a snack, eat the free snack during the class snack time.  We accept snack donations to keep in our snack closet for this purpose. Please consider donating a box of snacks for our snack distribution.  Donations can be brought to the EV Main Office.  Contact eastvincentoffice@ojrsd.com with questions.  Thank you!

Good Evening, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

    KUDOS TO OUR EV COMMUNITY

Great work to our Kindergarten Round-Up Team for coordinating a successful program for our Class of 2031 students and their families. The purpose of the Kindergarten Round-Up is for our families to meet some of our school staff and learn about East Vincent Elementary School and our programming. The experience also provides our future students the chance to see the kindergarten classrooms, meet the teachers, and participate in some fun activities.

    K

Congratulations to our elementary junior and senior orchestra ensembles and to our elementary chorus for a beautiful spring concert yesterday evening. Our musicians, Mr. Hall, and Ms. Marciano prepared many hours for their outstanding performance.

A NOTE ABOUT THE EXTREMELY HOT WEATHER

For the entire Owen J. Roberts School District, air conditioning is provided between approximately 5/15 through 10/15. These dates are part of an energy savings agreement with which the district operates.  The offices and all spaces at EV do not have A/C on yet.  In the meantime, we recommend that students and staff dress accordingly and bring reusable water bottles. Please remember that all shoes must have a back for safety reasons. We’ll be doing our best to keep our students and staff comfortable, well-hydrated, and engaged in their school day.

    A NOTE ABOUT SAFETY

We had a routine monthly fire drill on Monday. On Tuesday, we’ll have another fire drill and an evacuation drill.  For all of the drills, East Vincent PD and OJRSD Safety and Security will be on-site. We Tweet our drills, too, so families do not panic if they see a police presence at school. You can view our live Twitter feed on our EV webpage.

A REMINDER ABOUT OUR ONLINE CALENDAR

Remember to check our online EV calendar athttps://www.ojrsd.com/Page/12#calendar9/20180503/month to keep updated on current and future EV events. We began adding events for the 2018-2019 school year, too.  If you have a question about our calendar, send an e-mail toeastvincentoffice@ojrsd.com.

A REMINDER FOR OUR SNACK CLOSET

A NOTE ABOUT CLASS GROUPING FOR 18-19

We began the process of creating class lists for the 2018-2019 school year using the same process as EV has used in previous school years. When we develop our class lists, we consider participation in special programs such as special education, gifted education, grade-level subject acceleration, and tiered academic support.  Additionally, we consider learning styles, gender, social/behavioral dynamics, and overall classroom performance. If you have a special request due to the aforementioned considerations, please send an e-mail to Mr. Eisenhuth atmeisenhuth@ojrsd.com no later than Friday, May 11. We do not assign teachers until August, and we do NOT accept teacher-specific requests. Rumor is that we allow parents to choose their child’s teacher… someone shared that with me this week.  This is not the case. I can assure you, however, that our faculty spend a great deal of time crafting compatible groups.  They care about our students and strive to create the most successful experience for them.

A NOTE ABOUT THE REACH PROGRAM

We’ve posted pictures and comments on our social media pages about an after-school program called REACH. This is a program that began at East Coventry Elementary School.  With phase 2 of redistricting, we began the REACH program in spring 2018 for students who were part of phase 2 redistricting.  We look to expand the program in the future.

REACH stands for Resource Enriching After-school Children’s Haven, and it is a program for students in grades 3-5. The program focuses on enrichment opportunities and strengthens students’ socialization skills.

    East Vincent Elementary School News

Good Afternoon, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

    A FEW NOTES OF THANKS

Thank you for your patience with me for the lateness of this week’s Skylert. In all honesty, I got home from work last night and fell right asleep. One of my dogs has been sick this week and has had me awake most nights, so exhaustion got the best of me. Reminds me of the sleep-deprived days when my son was an infant… I don’t miss that time at all!

Thank you for your patience, too, with our school nurse inconsistencies. Ms. Melissa Golas, a former EV parent, has joined us from now until June 8. You may reach her via phone at 610-469-5186 or mgolas@ojrsd.com.

Check out our teacher’s Amazon Wish List items, which can be dropped off to our Amazon boxes in the main lobby starting on Monday, May 7. Click here Wish List copy.pdf for Wish List items by teacher.

    A NOTE ABOUT SAFETY

We intended to complete our fire drill for April today, but the weather did not cooperate.  We’ll have a fire drill on Monday.  During the month of May, we’ll have another fire drill (required monthly) and an evacuation drill.  For all of the drills, East Vincent PD and OJRSD Safety and Security will be on-site. We Tweet our drills, too, so families do not panic if they see a police presence at school. You can view our live Twitter feed on our EV webpage.

    A NOTE ABOUT KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP

Kindergarten Round-Up takes place this Monday, April 30. Current kindergarten students do not have school on 4/30. The kindergarten teachers have communicated this for awhile now.

The purpose of the Kindergarten Round-Up is for our families to meet some of our school staff and learn about East Vincent Elementary School and our programming. The experience also provides our future students the chance to see the kindergarten classrooms, meet the teachers, and participate in some fun activities.

We offer two sessions of Kindergarten Round-Up this year.

    ALL ABOUT ART NOTES

    EV ART Show!
Come and tour our building for our 1st ever school wide art show in our beautiful new building!!! Please mark your calendars to help celebrate your children’s accomplishments and very hard work on Wednesday May 16, 2018 from 6-8. If anyone would be willing to help display or return artwork, please contact Ms Smith at ssmith@ojrsd.com.

Dover Speedway – EV artists participated in a contest open only to 5th graders to design the Dover Speedway Pace car used in a race on May 6th. We did have students move onto final rounds of judging and we are so very proud they participated! Unfortunately, we did not have the winning design selected from our EV artists – but we are very proud of each student for taking a chance and entering their designs. They will however get to go to the May 6th race with a loved one! Perhaps we can try this one again next year!

Year Book – Its almost that time of year when we get to look back on the school year , remember and all the fun times and variety learning experiences. This year you will notice the yearbook may look a bit different. Each year 6th graders vote on the winning designs from each grade and they appear on the front and back cover. When counting results Ms Smith noticed they were extremely close for 6th grade – the winning design was selected but won by only 1 vote! Two artists did a great job and made it a tough choice. With that in mind, the yearbook committee decided to honor two 6th grade students and use each – one for the front cover and one for the back. Therefore, this change meant changes needed to be made to the insides regarding how the winning designs for k-6 were showcased. I have seen a proof and it looks terrific. Great job by the yearbook committee and by the families who donated their time to help make the yearbook special for our students!

Congratulations to: Jack Snyder and Hayden Beardsley for the front and back cover designs. Showcased inside this year are designs by: Colin Covey, Emma Mazzoni, Samantha Boylyn, Amanda Plasha, Erin Bolger, and Sophie Ludwick

    East Vincent Elementary School News

Good Evening, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

    A FEW NOTES OF THANKS

Thank you to the East Vincent Police Department for adding a traffic detail to Ridge Rd (Rte. 23) during active school zone times. I’ve received reports from families who notice cars speeding and honking when the speed limit is 15 mph.

Thank you to our East Vincent PD and the OJRSD Safety and Security Team for visiting EV on a regular basis.  This week we enjoyed a “stop by and say hi” visit from Captain Joe from OJRSD and Officer Bill from EVPD. Officer Bill may join us soon for some lunch bunches.

Thank you to the families who attended the last three weeks of Coffee Klatches.  Topics discussed included school safety, discipline, School-Wide Positive Behavior and Intervention Systems, Responsive Classroom, OLWEUS Bullying program, redistricting, and communication.  I’m taking a break next week (too much coffee), but I’ll share more dates next week.

Thank you to families who reached out to me to join a book club discussion. We’ll be in touch about some book club discussion opportunities virtually and in-person.  If you’d still like to join the fun and learning, send an e-mail to me with the book you’d like to read. Please see the last two Skylerts for book titles.

    East Vincent Elementary School News

Good Evening, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

I apologize for the late night Skylert, but I promised that I’d send out communication to you each Thursday.  There are some days that are longer than other days, and today was a long one.

Thank you to the families who have communicated with me recently about thoughts and suggestions via e-mails, phone calls, individual meetings, coffee klatches, and the April PTA meeting. We’ve experienced a lot of changes this year at EV so we appreciate your perspective.  A frequent concern is behavior and how do we respond and prevent it.  Via our Skylerts and other communication methods, we’ll continue to share our plans, responses, and your feedback.

    A FEW NOTES OF THANKS

Thank you to our PTA and our EV families for sharing Labels for Education points with East Vincent Elementary School. While Labels for Education was discontinued (the former collection of Campbell’s Soup Labels), we had some points to spend. We ordered the following with the remainder of our points: playground balls, basketballs, and jump ropes.

Thank you to our PTA and our EV families for supporting our spring Scholastic Book Fair. Our school library directly benefits from your support of the book fair events. Just this year alone, our library updated the shelves with well over $3000.00 worth of new books from Scholastic.

    A NOTE ABOUT PSSA TESTING

We completed our first week of PSSA testing… yeah!  Students had the opportunity to participate in English Language Arts PSSA testing in grades 3-6 Tuesday-Thursday morning this week.  Students who were absent for the testing will have the opportunity to participate in testing make-up sessions as early as tomorrow. Next week, students in grades 3-6 participate in the Mathematics PSSA testing on Tuesday and Wednesday.  PSSA testing typically begins around 8:45 a.m.

AS A REMINDER FROM LAST WEEK’S SKYLERT

We are now 2/3 of the way through the school year, and we can report that we are on a steady path of implementing a school-wide positive behavior intervention system (SWPBIS) and incorporating Responsive Classroom as our tier one approach. Mrs. Socha will work with the entire EV community for a period of at least 3-5 years, including family workshop events and regular staff training. Please note that 3-5 years means that we plan, implement, evaluate, and revise within that time. It does not mean that we need 3-5 years before we see positive changes.

    East Vincent Elementary School News

Good Evening, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

We had a busy week at EV despite having only four days of school.  We managed to escape the impending snow, too. I saw online that we have a new season: Sprinter… that spring season when all it does it snow. Hope that gave you a good giggle!

I say multiple times through the week how lucky we are to have the dream team here at EV.  We have the dream team of staff, students, families, and larger community. We all seem to be on the same page, which is we care deeply about educating and nurturing our students to be successful today and great tomorrow. I routinely enjoy genuine conversations about EV with our families.  Our conversations inform me how to celebrate the positives and improve upon what I like to call growth opportunities.  According to the recent family survey and conversations with parents/guardians, some of the growth opportunities include communication about clubs, safety on our playground, disruptive behaviors, and streamlining some of our current practices. Read on to learn more about how we continue to grow in our approaches.

Please remember that next week starts our PSSA testing window. See previous Skylerts for specific testing information or visit our PSSA webpage athttps://www.ojrsd.com/site/Default.aspx?PageID=8268.

    A FEW NOTES OF THANKS

Thank you to our sixth-grade student council officers and Mrs. Quinn for organizing a successful all-school assembly. We celebrated many students, staff, and community volunteers.

Thank you to the many families who donated vases for the upcoming Teacher Appreciation Week. We have almost the total we need in a short amount of time.

Thank you to our parents, East Vincent Police Department Chief Williams and Officer Ahles, and Dr. Lloyd, Superintendent of OJRSD, for attending the Coffee Klatch this past Tuesday evening. We had a productive dialogue about safety, including Run, Hide, Fight procedures.

    CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES

Congratulations to Saachi for sharing her research on Artificial Intelligence in the Behavioral and Social Sciences category at the Delaware Valley Science Fair today.

Best wishes to our Odyssey of the Mind teams, which compete in the state finals this weekend.

    ANOTHER COFFEE KLATCH DATE

Drop by and enjoy a coffee and chat “Coffee Klatch” with Ms. Seeley on Tuesday, April 10 from 4:00-5:00 p.m.  Coffee and condiments will be provided.  BYOM event (Bring Your Own Mug) event. The purpose of the coffee klatch format is to allow families and me to dialogue casually about positives, improvements, ideas, and concerns as they relate to EVES.  There is no agenda and the chat is meant to be informal; however, we can discuss another round of the safety Coffee Klatch if attendees wish.

AN EXCERPT FROM THE DECEMBER 1, 2017 SKYLERT

“Keeping with the safety theme, I would like to share our behavior and discipline approaches at East Vincent Elementary School.  I am sharing this with you with hopes that we shall continue our partnership to improve our approaches and mindset.  As you may be aware, there have been social media posts, discussions amongst families and students, and conversations with our EV staff and me about student behaviors and staff responses.  Our first priorities are safety and instruction.  That has not changed.  While we do not tolerate unexpected behaviors such as disrespect and disruption, they happen.  We work with young children, and we do not expect perfection; however, we do expect improvement.

The approach we assume as the staff of East Vincent is one of coaching students to identify the expected behaviors, reflect on the unexpected behaviors, and learn ways to improve their choices. We respond to student behavior using a coaching approach and when applicable, respond as indicated in our OJR Elementary Student Handbook.

To improve our mindsets and approaches, our staff routinely engage in professional development opportunities related to behavior and discipline.  Some of the professional development opportunities are ongoing such as book club discussions while others are long-term shifts in culture.  We have a behavior core team who will be trained in a school-wide positive behavior intervention system (SWPBIS) and assist the East Vincent Elementary School community with the roll-out of SWPBIS.  We began some of the shift but a system shift typically takes 3-5 years for development and implementation.

Again, I’m sharing this information with you because I am aware that our students have experienced some unexpected student behaviors.  While we empathize with you and we want compliant, respectful, on-task students 100% of the time, it is not reality.  We continue to work in partnership with our entire EV community to improve our approaches and mindsets.  I can tell you firsthand that our staff work diligently to maintain a productive and positive environment, and they care for and commit to all of our students.”

    COMMUNICATION ABOUT SAFETY

East Vincent teachers shared the Run, Hide, Fight videos with our students on Wednesday. The videos were created by grade level teams with developmentally appropriate messages, which showcase all three components: run, hide, and fight.  The reason for creating custom videos for EV is to lessen the “scare” factor by having familiar people and voices sharing the procedures, while stressing the importance of safety. While we know it is not an easy topic to share or discuss, it is necessary given today’s safety concerns.

Join Ms. Seeley and Sergeant Gammon from East Vincent Police Department in the Innovation Center at EVES from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 for the Run, Hide, Fight Coffee Klatch. While enjoying coffee and light refreshments, we’ll share lockdown procedures and provide opportunities for questions. This is a BYOM (bring your own mug) event.

On Tuesday, we held a successful fire drill with the assistance of our OJRSD safety and security staff.  As a reminder, we conduct a fire drill once per month, with the exception of two fire drills in the first month. We conduct other drills such as three different lockdown scenarios, weather-related, and evacuation.

    East Vincent Elementary School News

Good Evening, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

What a week we had with weather!  Hopefully, warm days filled with sunshine and blue skies are on the horizon.

A few meaningful impromptu Spirit Days that were shared with our staff and students recently:

Yesterday was #RockYourSocksDay for World Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Check out our social media for some fun pictures. Many thanks to first grader, Kenzie, for spearheading our crazy sock craze.

Speaking of crazy socks, tomorrow we’re honoring Cerebral Palsy Month with you guessed it, more crazy socks! Post your crazy socks on social media with #CerebralPalsyCan at #WeLoveEastVincent.

Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. On March 26 annually, people in countries around the world are invited to wear purple and host events in support of epilepsy awareness.  We’ll wear purple on Monday to celebrate Jack Rowley and all those affected by epilepsy.  Please spread the word to our students and families.

    A REMINDER FOR PSSA TESTING

Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) test administration takes place during the month of April for students in grades 3-6.  Students in grades 3-6 will participate in the English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics assessments. Students in grade 4 additionally participate in the Science assessment.  For appointment and trip planning purposes, we respectfully request students to attend school during the testing days to avoid make-up testing sessions.  Appointments and trips will not be excused on testing dates.

    Testing dates

    Grades 3-6 ELA April 10-12

    Grades 3-6 Math April 17-19

    Grade 4 Science April 24-25

    Grades 3-6 make-up tests: April 13, 16, 20, 23-27, April 30-May 4

More information will be shared about PSSA tests and the administration of the tests as we approach the testing window.  Please know that we stress to students about showing what they know and doing their best, but we do not encourage test stress.

See the OJRSD PSSA information letter from our Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Kathy Soeder: OJRSD PSSA INFORMATION.

    PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Mother Nature had different plans for our parent-teacher conferences… twice!  We apologize for the initial rescheduling which has now turned into a complete cancellation. We cannot extend our conference dates any later due to state-mandated testing schedules. If you still wish to discuss your child’s performance and progress with your child’s teacher, please contact him/her directly to arrange for an in-person or phone conference.  We appreciate your flexibility and understanding in advance.

    UPDATED DISTRICT CALENDAR

Snow Make-up Guidelines: June 6,7,8 are three snow days built into the calendar. A fourth snow day was used, therefore, school will be in session on March 28. A fifth snow day was used, therefore, school will be in session on March 29. Graduation will remain on June 8.Snow days used: 1/4/2018, 2/7/18, 3/7/2018, 3/21/18, 3/22/18. For a printable district calendar, click here.

As a look ahead, Take Your Child to Work Day (4/26) is unexcused unless a family submits a non-school sponsored travel form and the student has not used all three NSST days allotted by the district.  This day is also a PSSA make-up day.

    COMMUNICATION ABOUT SAFETY

East Vincent teachers created videos to demonstrate Run, Hide, Fight at East Vincent Elementary School. The videos were created by grade level teams with developmentally appropriate messages, which showcase all three components: run, hide, and fight.  The reason for creating custom videos for EV is to lessen the “scare” factor by having familiar people and voices sharing the procedures, while stressing the importance of safety. Teachers will share the videos next week.

The Run, Hide, Fight Coffee Klatch has been rescheduled. Join Ms. Seeley and Sergeant Gammon from East Vincent Police Department in the Innovation Center at EVES from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3. While enjoying coffee and light refreshments, we’ll share lockdown procedures and provide opportunities for questions. This is a BYOM (bring your own mug) event.

A NOTE ABOUT OUR SCHOOL NURSE

As our students and families know, Mrs. Kinneary, our school nurse, has been out of school since mid-November. In the interim, we have worked with a variety of substitute nurses from an outside agency. The nurses are qualified with LPN, RN, and/or CSN degrees/certificates.  Our regular substitute nurse, Mrs. Vitalia Lopez, sought employment closer to home and as a result, we are working with our new substitute nurse, Ms. Annette Bailey, or as the students call her Ms. Annette.  Like Ms. V, Ms. Annette has made connections with our students and staff at EV quickly.  We are working to create e-mail access for Ms. Annette. Her e-mail address will be abailey@ojrsd.com. In the meantime, you may call Ms. Annette directly at 610-469-5186.

A NOTE ABOUT HALLWAY BEHAVIOR for ALL GRADE LEVELS

Students and staff are working diligently to improve the hallway experience at East Vincent by demonstrating safe and respectful choices.

Please review hallway expectations with your child(ren):

    • Voices are off in the hallway
    • Walk in a straight, single-file line on the right side of the hallway
    • Arms are at our sides
    • Walk with a purpose
    • Keep line close together (not long spaces between students)

All staff are reviewing hallway expectations and practicing the expectations.  Additionally, teachers created stopping points (e.g. water fountain, clock, corner) for the line leader so the line can maintain expectations. Overall, the hallway behaviors have improved.  The biggest area for improvement is our hallway by the cafeteria during lunch/recess/special area transitions, especially with students in grades 5 and 6. Thank you for reinforcing hallway expectations at home.

    East Vincent Elementary School News

Good Evening, East Vincent Elementary School Families,

A NOTE ABOUT THE FIFTH GRADE CAREER FAIR

On Tuesday, students and staff from the Technical College High School visited fifth grade as part of our curriculum to expose students to career awareness and exploration.  The students had an opportunity to learn about careers in three clusters: Artistic, Mechanical, and Humanitarian.  Within these clusters were a slew of various jobs, and students from TCHS were on-hand to talk about, show, and demonstrate some of what they are learning about which can be applied to future careers.  Students created resumes to introduce the idea of the intersection between their interests and skills, as it pertains to goal-setting.  Many thanks to Mrs. Quinn and the fifth-grade teachers for preparing our fifth grade students for the fair.  Extra thanks to Mrs. Quinn for coordinating the event.

A NOTE ABOUT RECORDING ATTENDANCE AT EV

Please remember that we have a designated phone line for attendance calls.  The phone number is 610-469-5688.  This number should be used to report absences only, as it is checked twice per day.  Please do not leave early dismissal messages on our attendance line.  We won’t receive them. Also, we cannot accept e-mails from families to report a student absent (with the exception of today since our phone lines were inoperable… go figure!).

    IT’S SURVEY TIME

Three times per school year, I like to gather feedback formally from families to help us learn and grow. The survey includes three primary themes: communication, events and activities, and safety.  Please consider sharing your thoughts via a survey: https://goo.gl/forms/KSxW7MERCNut1wrA3. My goal is more than 42 responses, which was our count for the fall survey. I value your candor and your time. The survey will be open through March 23.

A NOTE ABOUT SIXTH GRADE COURSE SELECTION

From Mr. Sean Burns, OJRMS Principal

For course selection, visit the Course Selection Guide to assist with understanding the courses available. If for any reason you have difficulty using the link the information can be found on our webpage under OJRMS Announcements. Also, some questions have come from our 6th grade students and parents regarding selecting Foreign Language and electives at the Middle School. To assist with this decision, I would share the percent of students currently enrolled in 7th and 8th grade who take a Foreign Language in the Middle School are over 85%. Students who do not have a Foreign Language typically don't due to the need of additional support in the areas of Reading or Writing. Students should be selecting a language unless support is needed in these areas. I know we had originally stated March 16th as the date to complete this process. However, with the potential for a schedule change with conferences I am extending the date until after parent conferences take place. If we have conferences tomorrow and Thursday we will keep the date. If we have to move conferences due to inclement weather, we will set the date for March 28th. Hope this helps!

In order to complete this task, you MUST have the students’ login to Skyward using their username and password. If you are unsure of this information remind students the username and password is the same they use to login on a computer in school. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to the counselors at the Elementary, Middle School or myself at sburns@ojrsd.com to assist with any questions. Have a great day!

View this file for assistance when choosing electives: Elective Selection for Grade 7.
