As the full time teacher-librarian at West Vincent, I am thrilled to start another year in our beautiful library. We have many exciting activities planned for this year. Starting with our travel theme and continuing on through the year with Reading Olympics, a Read Across America Celebration, and our yearly Book Fair, I look forward to working with all of our West Vincent families.
Students in grades K-5 visit our library formally, with their class, once a cycle for 45 minutes. Library classes follow a set curriculum and offer our students the opportunity to become "effective users of ideas and information”. I work closely with teachers to integrate library skills and materials into the core curriculum. At all grade levels, the teachers and teacher-librarian work together to reinforce appropriate reading strategies and encourage self-selection of library materials. The library is open to students continually throughout the afternoon and students are permitted to visit as needed.
Students in grades K-2 typically participate in read-aloud story times that introduce them to fiction/nonfiction, literary genres, authors, foundations of research, parts of a book, and basic knowledge of library organization.
Those in grades 3-5 receive instruction in introductory research, digital citienship and reference skills. These sessions enable our students to grow and develop as independent and critical readers and users of library and information resources.
My goal is to provide a vital combination of resources, curriculum, activities, and professional expertise that help students acquire not just information, but the skills and judgment to make good use of that information. Most importantly, I strive to make learning fun.
I look forward to working with your children.
