East Vincent Band Information
Teacher: Mr. Klick (aklick@ojrsd.net)
Who can participate?
Students who are enrolled in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade are allowed the opportunity to participate in band. How do lessons work?
Band lessons occur once a week for 30 minutes during the school day. The lessons work on a pull-out basis, where students must ask their teachers to leave their class to attend their lesson. Lesson times work on a rotating schedule so students are not missing the same class time each week.
What instruments are available?
Students have the opportunity to learn the following instruments:
- Flute
- Oboe
- Clarinet
- Alto Saxophone
- Trumpet
- French Horn
- Trombone
- Baritone
- Percussion
- Students will be learning both the snare drum and bell set for lessons.
How can I get an instrument?
OJR’s music vendor is Menchey’s Music. They offer a rent-to-own program and have a representative who visits the school once a week on Tuesdays. For more information about their program, please see their website at www.mencheymusic.com
You are also able to use an instrument you already own or purchase a new one on your own. Please contact Mr. Klick for more information on what are quality instruments to look for.
What do we learn?
Students will learn how to properly perform on the instrument, including holding the instrument correctly, creating a proper embouchure, using proper air support, and playing with proper articulation with the tongue. For percussionists, we will be creating a proper stick/mallet grip and technique with the wrist.
Students will also be learning how to read music and rhythms, along with performing those notes/rhythms in their lesson book series “Measures of Success.” Students will then be applying those skills to their concert music in the spring in preparation for their Spring concert performance.
When are the performances?
In the first year of lessons, we have only a Spring Concert in May. For those who have been participating in two or more years of lessons, there is also a Winter Concert in December.
Please see the EV website calendar for more specific information on dates/times.
