Welcome to the Library!

As the full-time teacher librarian at French Creek, I am thrilled to start another year in our cozy library. We have many exciting activities planned for this year. Starting with our Storybook Pumpkin Contest and continuing on through the year with Reading Olympics and our Read Across America Celebration, I look forward to working with all our French Creek families.

Students in grades 1-5 visit our library formally for 45 minutes once every cycle with kindergarten visiting for 30 minutes once a cycle. Library classes follow a set curriculum and offer our students the opportunity to become “effective users of ideas and information.” I work closely with classroom teachers to integrate library skills and materials into the core curriculum. At all grade levels, the teacher and teacher librarian work together to reinforce appropriate reading strategies and encourage self- selection of library materials. The library is open to students continually throughout the day and students are permitted to visit as needed.

Students in K-2 typically participate in read aloud story times that introduce them to fiction/non-fiction, literary genres, authors, foundations of research, parts of a book, and basic knowledge of library organization.

Those in grades 3-5 receive instruction in introductory research, digital citizenship, and reference skills. These sessions enable our students to grow and develop into independent and critical readers and users of library and information resources.

My goal as your child’s teacher librarian is to provide a vital combination of resources, curriculum, activities, and professional expertise that helps students acquire not just information, but the skills and judgement to make good use of that information. Most importantly, I strive to make learning fun!

I look forward to working with your children.
