The National Spelling Bee first started in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to host a spelling bee. Little did they know that 90 years later their literacy effort would reach 11 million students every year. The National Spelling Bee is about much more than spelling, word origins and correct pronunciation. It is about inspiring confidence and a love of language that lasts a lifetime.
Every year, a speller (or two!) is declared the National Spelling Bee Champion. Their journeys started at home or in a classroom across America.
North Coventry Elementary is hosting its 2nd Annual Spelling Bee. All children in grades K-6 are invited to participate. We have three age groups:
Each age group is restricted to a total of 25 students.
K-1 Spelling Bee 2-3 Spelling Bee 4-6 Spelling Bee
In order to participate in the spelling bee, your child will need to attend the preliminaries for their grade level:
K-1 preliminary - Monday, December 3 - 3:15 - 4:15 pm. Click here to register and complete the permission slip:
Grades 2-3 preliminary - Monday, December 10 - 3:15 - 4:15 pm. Deadline to sign up: December 6, 2018.
Grades 4-6 preliminary - Monday, December 17 - 3:15 - 4:15 pm. Deadline to sign up: December 13, 2018.
Please arrive promptly at 4:15 pm to pick your child up at the doors at the main lobby. During the preliminary round, your child will learn the rules of the spelling bee, participate in the mini-spelling bee, and do a practice test. The purpose of the preliminary round is to familiarize the children with how the spelling bee runs and also learn the types of words that they will be expected to spell.
All children that sign up are also invited to participate in the Championship Finals on Thursday, January 10, 2019. (Snow date is Thursday, January 17, 2019)
