The journey starts with a single letter.
The National Spelling Bee first started in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to host a spelling bee. Little did they know that over 90 years later their literacy effort would reach 11 million students every year. The National Spelling Bee is about much more than spelling, word origins and correct pronunciation. It is about inspiring confidence and a love of language that lasts a lifetime.
Every year, a speller (or two!) is declared the National Spelling Bee Champion. Their journeys started at home or in a classroom across America.
North Coventry is hosting its Annual Spelling Bee. All children in grades K-6 are invited to participate. Each age group is restricted to 25 students.
In order to participate in the spelling bee, your child will need to attend the preliminaries for their grade level:
Grades K- 3 - Tuesday, January 2, 2024 - 3:15 - 4:15 pm (go to your child's School Pay account to register)
Grades 4 - 6 - Tuesday, January 9, 2024 - 3:15 - 4:15 pm (go to your child's School Pay account to register)
Please arrive promptly at 4:15 pm to pick your child up at the doors of the main lobby. During the preliminary round, your child will learn the rules of the spelling bee, participate in the mini-spelling bee, and do a practice test. The purpose of the preliminary round is to familiarize the children with how the spelling bee runs and also learn the types of words that they will be expected to spell.
All children that sign up are invited to participate in the Championship Finals on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 (snow date is Wednesday, January 24, 2024).
Times for the Championship finals are:
K-1 Spelling Bee - 5:00 pm in the gym
2 - 3 Spelling Bee - 6:00 pm in the gym
4 - 6 Spelling Bee - 7:00 pm in the gym
The champion for each category (K-1, 2-3 and 4-6) will receive a trophy and the winner of the Grade 4-6 category will move on to the Chester County Spelling Bee on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 (snow date February 13) at Collegium Charter School's Performing Arts Center.
