What's New?
  • What's New in 3rd Grade?

Reading- This week in Reading, we continued to study characters in our realistic fiction books. We took a hard look at the notes we have been jotting during independent reading time and self-assessed our work. Next we looked at our story Because of Winn Dixie and learned that all stories are shaped like a mountain. There is rising action and events, a climax, and finally a resolution. We ended the week by noticing how characters face and react towards problems as they climb the story mountain. We will continue to study our characters to see if they react in the same way each time they face a problem.

Writing- This week in writing, we continued to publish our books about our states. Students wrote their chapters, added text features, and some even picked their favorite page to display in hallway during conferences!

Math-  This week in math week:

    • used benchmarks of Liters and Milliliters to determine approximate volume
    • explored arrays and equal shares
    • solved number stories with measures
    • used fraction strips to determine fractions of a whole
    • identified fractions on a number line

Technology- This week we continued practicing multiplication facts using Xtra Math, Rocket Math AND Math Flash Cards. We played Rugs and Fences, Equivalent Fractions, and Memory Match on EDM this week. We created google docs for our state books and used Kiddle to search for "Kimages" for our documents. Kiddle is a kid friendly web browser. Finally we used Calm to practice mindfulness each day.

Word Study- ALL groups will test on Friday, 3/6.

ONE WEEK VS TWO WEEK SORTS

    • Orange group tests every Friday
    • Green and Blue groups will test every other week.
    • There will be written homework every Monday and the night before your child's test. All other nights your child should sort and study their words.
    • In order to pass the test, all students will need to spell two new words that fit the sort as well as write their discovery. PLEASE study the discovery nightly!
