Bus Stops & Routes
-
The Transportation Department of the Owen J. Roberts School District is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring safe and efficient transportation for both public and non-public students, in accordance with relevant local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
The establishment of school bus routes hinges upon the consideration of each student's residence and school. Subsequently, individual student bus assignments and stops are determined based on this information. Adhering to District policy, no elementary student (K-6) should be required to walk more than one and one-half miles, and secondary students (7-12) should not exceed two miles to reach their assigned bus stop.
The formulation of bus routes and stops is guided by the objective of efficiently serving a maximum number of students while ensuring compliance with considerations such as private property rights, traffic flow, student safety, and public concerns. New housing developments are incorporated into bus routes only after the dedication of their roadways to the municipality, with documentation presented to the Transportation Department.
Bus routes are established exclusively on public roadways conducive to safe travel for school buses, excluding cul-de-sacs and private roads. Special bus stops for medical reasons necessitate proper written notification from a physician.
Parents requesting their child's attendance at an elementary school beyond their Board-approved attendance area assume responsibility for transportation if the request is granted. Similarly, parents of non-resident students attending District schools are responsible for their child's transportation, as determined by the Non-Resident Agreement.
Transportation of regular education students to other school districts' public schools is not within the purview of the School District. Furthermore, student bus stops are strategically located in compliance with District policy, ensuring a minimum separation of 500 feet to prevent hazardous situations during loading and unloading.
The backing up of school buses is generally prohibited, with exceptions made only under extreme emergency situations or with explicit school board approval.
For kindergarten students, all busing rules, regulations, and procedures apply, with the distinction that they receive one-way transportation. Kindergarten students must be accompanied at the bus stop by a parent/guardian or an older sibling.
